Sports Therapy

Focuses on improving and restoring movement and function mainly for musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries. Our skilled sports therapists utilise a range of techniques to address a variety of conditions, from sports injuries to chronic pain.

Sports Therapy in Dudley

Recover from injury, move with greater confidence and work towards returning to the activities you enjoy with personalised sports therapy at SN Clinic. Based in Dudley, we help active adults, gym-goers, runners, sports players and people experiencing everyday musculoskeletal pain with assessment, treatment and structured rehabilitation.

What Is Sports Therapy?

Sports therapy focuses on the prevention, assessment, management and rehabilitation of injuries affecting your movement and physical function.

Although the name includes “sport”, you do not need to be a professional athlete or even play a sport to benefit. Sports therapy can support anyone whose muscle, joint, tendon or ligament problem is preventing them from exercising, working comfortably or enjoying everyday activities.

Your therapist will assess how you move, discuss your symptoms and create a treatment and rehabilitation plan based on your condition, lifestyle and recovery goals.

The Society of Sports Therapists describes sports therapy as being concerned with injury prevention and helping people return to functional, occupational and sport-specific fitness, regardless of age or ability.

Who Can Benefit From Sports Therapy?

You may benefit from sports therapy if you:

  • Have recently experienced a sprain, strain or sports-related injury.
  • Keep experiencing the same pain when running, training or exercising.
  • Feel restricted by stiffness, weakness or reduced mobility.
  • Are returning to activity after an injury or period of rest.
  • Need support rebuilding strength, stability and confidence.
  • Want to reduce the risk of the same injury happening again.
  • Experience pain that affects your work or everyday movement.

We work with people at different activity levels from competitive sports players to people starting a new gym or running programme.

Sports Injuries and Problems We Help With

Our sports therapists can assess and help manage a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries and movement problems, including:

Lower-body injuries

Upper-body injuries

  • Shoulder pain and restricted movement
  • Rotator cuff problems
  • Tennis or golfer’s elbow
  • Wrist and forearm strains
  • Neck and upper-back tension

Other common problems

  • Return-to-running or return-to-sport rehabilitation

Every injury is different. Your therapist will assess your symptoms and advise whether sports therapy is appropriate or whether you should be referred to another healthcare professional.

What Happens During Your Appointment?

1. Initial assessment
We will discuss your symptoms, how the problem started, your medical and injury history, and the activities you want to return to.

2. Movement and injury assessment
Your therapist may assess your movement, strength, flexibility, balance and the affected muscles or joints to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.

3. Personalised treatment and rehabilitation
Your appointment may include hands-on treatment, movement advice and exercises designed around your needs. You may also receive a rehabilitation plan to complete between appointments.

4. Progress and return to activity
Your plan can be adjusted as your movement, strength and confidence improve, helping you work towards returning to exercise, sport, work or normal daily activity.

Sports Therapy or Physiotherapy: What Is the Difference?

Sports therapy and physiotherapy overlap considerably when treating muscle, joint, tendon and ligament injuries. Both may use assessment, manual treatment, movement advice and rehabilitation exercises.

Sports therapy generally has a stronger focus on musculoskeletal injuries, injury prevention, exercise rehabilitation and preparing someone to return to physical activity or sport.

Physiotherapy is a broader healthcare profession that can also cover areas such as neurological, respiratory and more complex medical rehabilitation.

SN Clinic provides both sports therapy and physiotherapy. Where you are uncertain which service is suitable, contact the clinic and the team can help you choose the most appropriate appointment.

After starting running a couple months back, I developed an issue with my hip flexors, more specifically the one side, giving me pain every time I ran. After a few sessions of laser, cupping, massages and advice with Poppy (and Stacey), I’m glad to say I’m back to running with no pain. I’ll definitely be booking other treatments in too after the service received all round. Thank you ☺️

Sports Therapy FAQs

Do I need to play sport to have sports therapy?

No. Sports therapy can help active people of different ages and abilities. You may benefit if an injury or movement problem affects your exercise, work or daily activities.

What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily. Shorts, leggings, loose trousers and a T-shirt are generally suitable. Your therapist may need to assess the movement around the injured area.
Does sports therapy hurt?
Assessment and treatment should remain within a manageable level of comfort. Some areas may feel tender and rehabilitation exercises may feel challenging, but tell your therapist immediately if anything causes significant pain.
How many appointments will I need?
This depends on the type of injury, how long you have experienced symptoms, your activity level and how you respond to treatment. Your therapist will discuss the recommended plan after assessing you.
What is the difference between sports therapy and sports massage?
Sports massage is a specific hands-on treatment used to work on muscles and soft tissue. Sports therapy is broader and may include injury assessment, movement testing, hands-on treatment, rehabilitation exercises and return-to-activity planning.
Can sports therapy help an old or recurring injury?
Sports therapy may help identify weaknesses, movement restrictions or other factors associated with recurring symptoms. Following assessment, your therapist can create a plan focused on restoring movement and reducing the likelihood of another setback.
